We all buy them one time or another. You know those nice and easy cake mix, pudding mixes and jello mixes. Even baking mixes and cookie mixes. One of the bad things about them is they take up a lot of room in your storage area. Think about it. Just how much mix is actually in each box. Chances are good that the mix only uses about half of the box and then the rest is just box. Now think of all the room a bunch of those boxes take up. That is a lot of wasted storage space isn't it?
What is a person to do? You still want to make sure you can give your family some of their favorite baked goods, pudding, jello and more after SHTF but you just can't find enough room to store that much. And even if you do those mixes only last so long before they go bad. So now you not only have wasted storage space but may also have wasted food dollars if you can't use all you store before they go bad. There has to be another way to give your family the special treats them want and still have plenty of storage room. Guess what? There is!!
Simply storing the basic baking supplies, dried fruits and nuts, and some half gallon and gallon glass jars with tight fitting lids you can store all the mixes you will need to do you for a few months plus have plenty of supplies to make more when your mixes run out.
Now normally I do not recommend books but this is one time I am going to do it. There is a book called the Make-A-Mix book by Karine Eliason, Nevada Harward & Madeline Westover that has 67 mixes recipes plus over 300 recipes you can make with this mixes. There is recipes for hot cocoa mix, bread mixes, cookie mixes, pudding mixes, dinner roll and donut mixes, pancake and waffle mix, snack cake mix, muffin mix and more. Plus there are a bunch of different recipes to use with each mix. This is my go to book for baking. I make most of the mixes in this book and I use them all the time. The best thing is all I have to do is store some basic supplies and I am ready to make what ever I want.
It is a lot easier to store, flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, spices, honey, nuts, dried fruits, chocolate chips and so on then it is storing all those half to 2/3 full boxes of mixes and since you can make several things from each make a mix you have more options of what you can do with your homemade mixes then you can with store bought mixes. And just think, if you want a little less sugar in your baked goods you can use less. With bought mixes you have no choice but to use the higher amount of sugar that they have in them.
So I urge you to get a copy of the Make-A-Mix book and start making your own mixes. You can make your money back for the price of the book with the first few mixes you make since they will be cheaper than buying the store bought mixes.
