Today we got a surprise visit from Bryan. He came back to check on his house and the town. His brother & nephew came with him. They had no problem getting past the blockade since just about everyone in town knows Bryan. He is one of the biggest employers in our area.
He brought us another 200 gallons of gas which is going to be a big help since we only have about 40 gallons left. We have been using it very carefully. He also brought me 30 ever bearing strawberry plants, some aspargus plants and a grape vine. He knew from last year that I was wanting them this year. The plants had been in the cold storage all winter and Bryan thought they would still be good.
But the best thing he brought us was news. Our son had found some one with a ham radio and sent out a message looking for us. Bryan's brother had caught it from another ham radio operator. Our son and his family are safe. They got caught down at his inlaws when the power went out and they could not leave them alone to come back home. His father in law has cancer and he brother in law is in a wheel chair from a car accident when he was 18. There is no way they would have made it on their own. Byran had talked to our son and assured him that we were okay the last he knew and that he would come and check on us again and get back to my son with what he found. I had thought all along that that must have been what happened with our son and his family. I knew that my son with all his army training and some other special training he had recieved a few years back that he would be able to keep his family safe. Though I missed them badly I was pretty sure they were alright.
Byran had more news for us. Reports were all over the ham radio waves that power had been restored to a small part of the east coast and they expect to have all the power and refineries restored by spring of next year. The White House was back in operation and the president was back in office. I am not sure this is a good thing or not. He is an entitlement president and believes everyone should have the same things in live. He is one of the biggest reasons things got so bad when the power went out. He had expanded the welfare roll to over 50 million people living on welfare because of his healthcare debacle. Most of these people had been living on welfare because they had been laid off from their jobs do to the healthcare laws and small business could not afford the higher cost of supplying insurance to their workers. I will admit that he was not soley responsible because other presidents before him had been expanded the welfare roll for years causing generations to grow up living on welfare and no desire to work for a living. Why work when the government was meeting their needs while they sit home and enjoy life? I hope those who survived now know the value of hardwork.
Bryan had also heard from his wife. She is alive and well and will be on her way home soon. Their son was stationed at Fort Hood in Texas when the power went out. He had found out that the president was sending some of the soliers north to help with getting things up and running and he was able them to agree to bring his mom back to the town where is dad is staying. They will be passing by it any way on their way north.
We talked for almost an hour before Bryan left to head back to his brother's house. They warned us to stay away from the bigger towns because they were now being run by gangs and they were always fighting between themselves. Bryan and his brother had moved their parents out to where his brother lived and they were all staying there now. One big town was reporting that they had lost over 3/4 of their population due to people starving to death, freezing to death or being killed by gangs.
According to reports their heard on the ham radio its believed that there have been over 1 million lives lost in the USA so far and that is just the ones they know of. We all expect when the final count is made that its going to be a lot higher than any one would ever expect.
The guys dug up beds to plant the strawberries and aspargus in and they they planted the grape vine at the end of the patio. They are going to make a trelllis for it to grow up on later. It will be nice to have more fruit to add to our food storage and to have for fresh eating.
After dinner tonight we all sat around rejoicing in the news that our son and his family was alive and well. That the power should be back on by next spring and that we now had more hope then we had had in quite some time.
One thing does have me a little worried. So far we have not seen the military in our small town and we have not been under marial law. I wonder if that will happen now since the president is back in office and running the country again. Maybe we should start hiding some of our storage in case they come to take our food. I will talk to them about it tomorrow. For now I am going to let them celebrate the good news. We havent gotten very much good new lately until today. I don't want to spoil it for them.
