Steve, Mike and JR are going to go outside and check the bodies this morning to see if any one is alive. Tammy and I are going out to the garage and see if we can salvage any of the food from last night. Since it was down to 14 degrees most of it might still be good. Nikki is going to grab some wood and get the heater going again.
All the food is still good. It has taken Tammy and I four trips to bring it all in the house, Jen and Nikki are warming it up on the rocket heater and the kerosene heater. My sil had pulled the beans off the heater just before the gang attacked yesterday and she put them in the refrigerator after the fight was over. She got them out and put them on the rocket heater to heat up. It might seem weird having dinner for breakfast but since none of us really had much to eat last night we are all starving this morning. Also we can not afford to let food go to waste if at all possible.
While the food was heating Steve, JR and Mike pulled all the bodies around to the side of the house where the children would not see them and then they collected all the weapons that were laying by the bodies and brought them into the house. They brought in 7 guns, a bunch of knives, two long swords and three metal baseball bats. We were lucky. We had ammo to fit all the new guns we now had. While the rest of us went back to guard duty, Julie ( my sil ) and Nikki filled plates of food and handed them out to everyone. After we had all eaten I sent John and Dave to bed for 3 hours. The rest of us would stay on guard duty and every three hours those who were sleeping would get up and two more would get to rest for three hours.
Steve, JR and Mike took the new guns, cleaned them, sighted them in and then loaded them with ammo. They gave the women the hand guns and kept the rifles for themselves. Now everyone of us had at least two loaded weapons at all times. Julie can not hold a gun because of her hands that is why she never stands guard duty but she pulls her weight and more by taking care of the kids and doing house work while the rest of us do the heavy chores.
It's going to be a long day for all of us since we have all been up for over 24 hours. Mike and Steve feel its best that we stack at least 3 days worth of wood in the house and another 5 gallons of kerosene just in case the gang comes back. We don't want to get caught with no way to keep the house warm enough for the kids. They also going to bring in some scrap pylwood and pieces of insulation to make sure all the cold air is blocked from coming in and to re enforce the windows.
We need an easy fix meal tonight so I am going to make some hamburger buns and cook them in the roaster oven insert on top of the rocket heater. Julie makes a really good homemade barbacue sauce so I will get out what she needs to make that and 2 quart jars of canned ground beef plus two quarts of sliced potatoes I canned. I am also going to make some cherry jello and put some of my home canned seedless green grapes in it. Dinner consisting of sloppy joes, fried potatoes and jello sounds good for tonight.
It's not easy to eat when you know there are a bunch of dead bodies laying just out side your house but it was their choice to attack us so they paid the price for their choice. We did nothing to them. We did not attack them first nor did we ask them to attack us. All we did was what we had to do to survive.
If we have no more problems in the next two days the guys are going to load up the bodies and haul them to the cemertary that is about a mile from the house. They are just going to dump them there because they do not want to leave the rest of us alone to long in case the rest of the gang comes back.
From now on there are going to be three people on guard duty at all times. Starting tonight Steve, Mike and Jen are going to take the midnight shift, John, Dave and I are going to take the day shift and JR, Tammy and Nikki are going to take the evening shift.
We were very luck this time but I wonder if our luck will hold out if we are attacked again. It's hard to believe just how fast the world can go to hell in a handbasket but when people are cold and hungry they are willing to restort to any means to get what they want and need. And most of them will not stop until they get what they are after or are stopped by a bullet. I have no idea yet what the death toll is from the lights going out but I bet its a lot higher than any death toll America has had happen on her soil so far that was caused by one event.
