It's July now and the green beans and waxed beans are ready for picking. We are going to can them. So far we have added 30 quarts of ramps that Mike, Jen and Steve had been able to find plus we canned most of the 100 pounds of morels they harvested to our food storage for this coming winter. We also ate fresh cooked ramps and morels for over a month. I love the taste of the ramps and a good internet friend would be proud of me because I am eating morels to. She was always trying to get me to eat mushrooms. I think about her a lot and hope she got to her parents and they are all doing good. I know her well enough to know if there was any way she could get to them she would. She is a very strong person in her own right and is determined. I hope to hear from her again one day soon. If the power every comes back on here and the phones start working again I am going to be calling her to find out if she is okay.
Steve and Mike found some one with bee hives so they went to learn how to build one and what to do to attract the bees to it. We now see lots of bees going in and out of the hive they built all day long. Since I am allergic to bee stings this is one job they are going to have to handle on their own. I can't knowing risk a bee sting.
We picked a bushel of green beans and one of waxed beans. We saved some for dinner and the rest we canned. We now have over 100 quarts of beans added to the winter food storage. The neighbor lady who lives across the street comes over every day and does what ever she can to help us with preparing for winter. She and her husband are going to have to come back here to stay during the cold weather so they want to pay their own way as much as they can.
While we were canning the beans we all got to talking about the block party we had on the 4th of July. There was a total of 67 people at it. We all made side dishes and one of the neighbors had gotten a nice size pig when he was out hunting so we roasted the pig over the fire pit. Everyone had their American flags flying and we had games for the kids and adults. They played horseshoes, washers, kick ball, hopscotch, tic tac toe, checkers and catch. It was a good day and we all had a lot of fun. Later one of the neighors pulled out his stereo system and they hooked it up to the bike powered generator and people took turns pedling the bike to keep the stereo going and we had a stree dance. Torches had been li and mason jars with candles in them and wire around them were hung up to light up the street. We knew we were not the only ones having a block party. You could look down any stree and see block parties going on else where. Sounds of laughter and kids squealing with delight could be heard all over town that night. Some one had even managed to find fire works and was setting them off. We could see most of them from our block. It was the best day this town has had in a long time. It was a real celebration of freedom and life. Both which are now more precious to us then ever before.
A lot of us are having mixed feelings about the power coming back on. While we love how having electric and gas makes getting what we need to do easier and money makes it easier to buy things we all know that we will lose a lot of the freedom and closeness we have now. When the power comes back people will have to go back to work. The government will be able to meddle in our lives again and taxes will have to be paid. And then we will once again be listening to and having to follow all the bullshit laws that the stupid idiots in the government decide to make. I can only pray that they come back smarter and more willing to work together for the betterment of this country. But knowing how they behaved in the past I doubt it. I also doubt they are going to find it as easy as they have before to pass stupid laws. The American people who have survived till now have learned what true freedom is and have learned to work together for the betterment of their familes, their neighborhoods and their towns. They are not going to let things go back to the way they were. They will fight for their rights and freedoms like they have never fought before. I think this time the government is going to have no choice but to learn to listen to the American people instead of ignoring them like they alwasy have in the past.
