It's been two days since we were attacked. Steve, Mike and JR are going to haul off the bodies today. We think this gang came from a bigger town that is about a 30 minute drive southwest of us. Many of the ones that were killed are wearing jackets with the high school's name and mascot from that town on them. We think they are following the main highway, headed to the bigger cities to the east of us.
When the attack happened none of us had any idea for sure who we were aiming our guns at. When the guys went out to check on the bodies they found that two of the bodies were female. We all feel a little bad about shooting women but what are you going to do when they are attacking you. Let them do it just because they are women. I don't think so. Really I should say young women since Steve and Mike said they didn't look much older than 15-16 years old.
After breakfast the guys loaded up the bodies and took them to the cemetary. Apparently we were not the only ones attacked as they found a bunch more bodies that had been dumped in the cemetery. And they found five fresh dug graves so we think we lost some of our town folks.
When the guys got back from dumping the bodies they started working to make our area more secure. They took the batteries off Tammy's car and Julie's car and wired the motion detector lights directly into the batteries. We had one in the front of the house and one at the back. Oh how I wished now that I had bought the solar motion lights when I had the chance. Then they got out the chainsaw and cut all my Rose of Sharon bushes down even with the ground to keep any one from hiding behind them. I am going to miss those beautiful blooms next summer but you have to do what you can to survive. They did save all the branches from the bushes and added them to the pile that was stacked in the garage. It would give us more firewood for the rocket heater and rocket stove.
One of the smartest moves I had made 3 years prior to the night the lights went out was to give away the big tower antenna that had been attached to the back of our house. If we had still had it anyone would have been able to climb it and possibley get into the house the day of the attack.
My husband use to keep his 16 foot ladder hung up on the outside wall of the garage. I never felt save with it there and complained about it. He finally made hangers for it in the garage and now it was stored in there. Now he sees my point in fussing about having the tower antenna attached to the house and the ladder hanging on the outside of the garage. He no longer thinks I was being silly to want them taken down and moved.
When I had first put the screws in the windows to keep any one opening them from the inside I got to thinking that if we ever had to use our guns we would not have time to take the screws out to open the windows so we would have no choice but to shoot through the glass. I decided to move the screws up four inches to give us enough room to open the windows to shoot. I am now glad I did because it saved us from having to break out a lot of windows.
Steve and Mike had worked hard all day so instead of eating dinner that night they went to bed to get some sleep before it was their shift for guard duty. I promised them we would keep some stew and biscuits back for them to eat when they got up. Julie volenteered to stay up and have the stew heated for them so I could go to bed and get some rest.
It seemed like I had just went to sleep when Tammy shook me awake. She pointed to her ear so I reached for my hearing aids. As soon as I got the first one in I heard a gunshot. Tammy told me that our neighbors across the street were under attack. We knew there was only two people living in the house and there was no way they could defend themselves from such a large gang. We all grabbed our guns and started shooting to help defend our neighbors. As soon as we started shooting the gang started running for cover. I guess they never expected to be caught in a cross fire. After a few minutes of heavy gun fire the gang took off for parts unknown. Four of their members had been left behind lying on the ground. Suddenly I see an arm come up from one of the bodies and we started hearing cries for help. Our neighbor used a flashlight to signal us to let us know they were alright and we did the same to let them know we were ok. The cries for help went on through the night for a couple of hours growing weaker over time. Then they just stopped. We hated to let who ever it was lay out there in the snow and suffer but we were not about to take a chance going out to see if we could help. We had no idea if it was just a ruse to draw us out in the open or what and we were not about to risk finding out.
At day break JR, Steve and Mike went out, checked the bodies and moved them where the kids could not see them then they collected the weapons and went over to check on our neighbors. They said they were alright but would not have made it if we had not helped. They only had two guns between them. The guys had found 4 guns on the bodies and a little ammo. They gave them to the neighbors to help them out. We had plenty of guns and ammo now so we were okay.
We all knew which body had raised their arm and called repeatedly for help. When the guys checked him they found a young boy who could not have been much older then 12-13 years of age. We all were sadden by the death of a child but at least the three young children in our house were still alive and safe.
