Tammy was the first one up the next morning. I had kept her up most of the night with my coughing. She got the fire in the heater going better and then pot on a pot of water for tea. While the water was heating she got the coffee pot ready to go. Once the water was hot she made me a cup of tea and came over, felt my forehead and then woke me up. She told me I was burning up with fever so she was going to go get me some Tylenol and water to take them with. Even though I had a fever I felt like I was freezing. When she came back witht the Tylenol and water I tried to tell her thank you but I could barely make my throat work. It was so sore and my tonsils were swollen. It was then that I suspected I had strep throat. I had Tammy go get a tongue depressor out of the medical kit and a flashlight so she could see if I had white spots on my throat. She check and said my throat was covered in white spots. I told her I had strep and to keep the kids away from me for the next few days.
After I had drank my tea Tammy told me to lay down and rest and not to worry about meals. That she would take care of them and make sure just enough was cooked for one meal at a time. After every one was up and ready for breakfast Tammy got out some of the leftover smoked pork and shredded it, then she scrambled two dozen eggs and sliced some bread. She cooked the eggs and pork together and toasted the bread. While she was cooking Amy and her grandmother set the table and got out the butter and jelly. Tammy toasted the bread by the open fire and my sil buttered it. When the food was done Tammy plated it up for everyone and then called them to the table. I had fallen back to sleep.
A couple of hours later Tammy came over and woke me up. She had a cup of hot chicken broth in her hand. She told me I need to eat something so I sat up and drunk the broth. While I was sitting there Tammy sat down next to me and told me that when she had told everyone I had strep Jen had offered to make a poultice from herbs that her grandmother had taught her to make. Tammy had told her no thanks but Mike had said we should let her make it and that she had done it several times for him when he was sick and he got better faster. Tammy told them that it was up to me and the next time I was awake she would ask me about it. I agreed to try it because I didn't think any thing could make me feel worse at that point. Tammy stood and watch Jen make it just incase Jen put anything in it that I was allergic to. She knows all my allergies.
Jen made something similer to a old time mustard plaster and brought it and put it on my chest. Then she brought another smaller one and put it around my neck. Then she made me an herbal tea I have never had before. It really soothed my sore throat. Jen doctored me for the next two days and buy the third day I was feeling a lot better and was able to eat noodles and other soft foods. By the fifth day I was feeling back to normal and up and about. They made me take it easy but at least I got to do things again. Tammy was still doing the cooking. She had been making soups and stews out of the food storage and from the few leftovers from Christmas dinner.
Tomorrow is New Year's Eve so I have got to come up with something special for New Year's day dinner. Everyone had vetoed me cooking in the garage so what ever I come up with is going to have to be cooked on the heater and kerosene heater. I had my heart set on making a special meal.
