It's the middle of March now. Things have been pretty quite. We have not heard and guns going off in a couple of weeks. Spring will be here soon and I want to get ahead start on getting the seeds growing. I had Steve get me two large totes out the attic this morning while Mike and JR brought in the big bag of potting soil that Bryan had brought us. They also brought in the flats he had brought. I went out to the garage and grabbed my big roll of heavy plastic and covered the kitchen table with a piece of it. while the guys mixed the soil with water and then filled the flats with it. Then they put up two folding table in front of the livingroom window where the flats would get sun during the day. All of us women planted the seeds with the help of Amy and Kyle then the guys would carry the flats into the living room and set them on the tables.
We planted 100 leeks, 75 paste tomatoes, 25 green bell pepper plants, 25 red bell pepper plants, 30 chili pepper plants, 100 onion seeds, 30 broccoil, 30 cabbage and 10 beef steak tomatoes. We also planted a bunch of herb seeds in pots. We planted sage, dill, parsley, cutting celery, 4 types of mint, basil, chives, thyme and comfrey. We will plant the cukes, watermelon, cantalopes and beans in a couple of weeks.
As soon as the ground can be worked the guys are going dig up as much as they can to enlarge the garden. We need to try and double the space if at all possible. I wish we could plant potatoes and sweet potatoes but we don't have the starts to do it with. We will just have to make do with what we have.
The guys spent the last two weeks hunting and so far they brought home another deer, two turkeys, 10 rabbits and another pig they found running loose in the woods. We think the pigs they have found came from the pig farm that is about a mile and a half out of town. Mike has been teaching Steve and JR how to hunt and they are doing pretty good at it.
Mike got the idea to make a couple of runs to the junk yard and they came back with the stuff to make a couple of rain water collection systems. He plans on setting one up at the garage and one at the house. We thought about using my drip hoses but have now decided it might be better to water the garden by hand. It might take less water if we do it that way since we will only be pouring water directly at that bottoms of the plants.
I hope my cherry tree and plum tree produce this year so that we have more fruit to can. Our fruit supply is getting pretty low. This will be the second year for my raspberry plants so hopefully we will get a good harest from them. They grew a lot last year.
Mike knows where some wild blackberry plants grow every year behind his parents place so they are going to dig some of them up when the weather gets warmed and bring them here. I don't know what we will do for peaches and apples. Hopefully we will find some way to get some.
