No one else ever came again to take over the town. We kept the majority of our food stores, guns and ammo well hidden. Jobs were coming back, stores were opening and banks were opening. Tammy, JR and Nikki had decided to stay here in town. Nikki did not want to leave her new boyfriend and move back to Indiana. Tammy had finally realized just how bad a shape her dad was in so she wanted to be closer to us in case something happened to him. The neighbors moved back to their house now that they had heat and power. They only took two weeks of food with them even though I tried to give them more. Their social securtiy checks had come in so they said they would be fine.
Dave, Julie, Mike, Jen and Amy moved back to Dave and Julie's house taking just enough food to make it a month. We moved back into our bedroom and gave Tammy and JR the room we had been using. Steve gave Nikki his big bedroom for her, Maci and Kyle while he moved in to the little bedroom upstairs. Steven's boss called and said the station was opening back up and if he knew any one that wanted a job to bring them in. JR spoke up asking could he go. Nikki and Tammy got jobs at the local grocery store, John and I watch Kyle and Maci while everyone else works.
We have decided to keep the root celler, the cob oven, the rocket stove, the smoker and all the rain water collection system in place and continue using them. The city tried to make everyone in the city limits give up their livestock and that did not go over well. In the end they finally agreed every one could have up to 12 chickens and 3 goats but no other livestock. Rabbits were counted as pets so they didn't fall under the livestock ruling. One other rule they passed concerning the live stock was they all had to be kept in fenced in yards or pens.
Its been a little over two and a half years since the night the lights went out and almost a year since they came back on here in town. Tammy and JR found a nice little house to rent with nice size garden area. They moved in there with Kyle. School is open now and Kyle is enrolled in all day school. Tammy and JR got their hours at work set up so that one of them is home with Kyle at all times.
Nikki moved in with her boyfriend and is in the process of getting a divorce. Its suppose to be final in two months. Loser boy never showed up and we have no idea if he is alive or dead. None of us really care one way or the other. Nikki's boyfriend is going to adopt Maci after they are married.
We all get together on Sunday for a big family meal. Dave, Julie and their bunch join us. Steve, Mike and JR still go hunting together and Mike smokes some of the meat. We ladies all get together and can the meat then divided it up. John and Dave join them on fishing trips. John is now able to help me in the garden. He can do a lot more now since we neither one went back to smoking and we don't allow anyone to smoke in the house.
Everyone has gone back to their old normal way of life to some degree but we are all still maintaining the relationships we had built the stronger community we built and the freedoms we fought so hard for.
Our son and his family finally came back home. Their home was ransacked and a lot of their stuff was taken but otherwise everything is alright. We see them a couple of times a month now. I was able to get ahold of my internet friend. She had made it to her parents and they were all doing well. I have heard from most of the people who I met through my online preppers group and all are doing well. We are still waiting to hear from some.
All of people that stayed here while the lights were out all owe the people of my preppers groups and other groups a whole lot of thanks. If it had not been for the people I met online teaching me and sharing information in all areas of prepping we would not have survived. There was no way I could have collected all the information, pictures, instructions and more in my notebooks if it had not been for them. I have been able to thank some of them and let them know that they saved lives by sharing their knowlegde but there are still those out there that I hope one day I can say thanks to. None of us will ever really know how many lives they saved but I can tell them this much. They saved one little town of 2100 people.
The final death was released for our town and for the nation. In our town a total of 476 people died. The count for the nation is over 4.5 million lives were lost. I have not heard the final death count for Canada and Mexico but hear they are both quite high. Reports say that it is believed that Canada has lost over half their people.
All parties that were responible for taking America to her knees have been caught. Some have already been put to death after going through trials. The rest are awaiting their trials. They are learning along with the rest of the world that even if you knock America to her knees she is going to come up swinging and getting more and more determined and powerful. They are also learning pay back can be a real bitch!
