The best method of all is to boil any water you get from any source other than your own well or a city water system if it is working. Lake water, pond water, rain water or even standing water should always be boiled and then for add safety and taste the water should be run through a filtering system.
Boiling the water kills Protozoa, Bacteria and Viruses. It does not however remove chemicals and Radioactive Particles. Just filtering the water does not remove all Viruses. Bleach will not remove the Harmful Chemicals or Radioactive Particles.

Boiling water is easy so I won't go into that. When it comes to filtering water there are many types of filtering systems out there that you can buy or you can build your own. The Berkley is considered a good filter system and so is the AquaRain Model 400 Gravity Water Filter. But both can be pretty pricey.
There are many home made water filtering systems that can be made rather cheaply. Like the two 5 gallon buckets and sand method. Then there is the two 5 gallon bucket method using Black Berkley filters. Since I am not good at explaining the tec side of making these I will be placing the how to videos in the How To's section on the site.
But remember that in order to have truely safe drinking water you should boil the water first and then filter it.
Thanks for the great information. I was thinking of doing a pre-filter, then boiling, the using a berkey type filter. Glad to know I was on the right track.

I would boil the water first to kill the bactria and to help cut down on any lime. That way your filters might last a little longer. But that is just me. :)
