We found out about a Amish saw mill down here not long after we moved here. Since we have a fireplace now and I use wood to cook on my rocket stove we decided to buy a load of slab wood to use. It cost us $20 for a load of 12 foot slabs which we then cut into lengths small enough to fit into our fireplace. I forgot to take a picture of the bundle of wood when we first got it but below is some pictures of what it looks like now that we have it all cut and stacked. It was over a cord when we first got it but we have been using it almost every night for a month now so there is only about 2/3 left of if and the guys figure there is still about a cord or more left.
The thickness of the wood was already cut since all it is is the bark cut from trees before the boards are cut. All we had to do was cut it into the length we needed and we did have to split some of the thicker pieces as they were to wide to fit into the fireplace. This is all hard oak and for $20 I think we got a good deal. We will need one more load which we were suppose to get this week end but due to Pete's truck breaking down we will have to get it next week end.
Some of the real thin pieces I have been splitting with a hatchet to use in my rocket stove for cooking on nice days.
So if you burn wood check around and see if you can find a saw mill in your area where you can buy the cast off slabs for next to nothing if you don't mind cutting them to the length you need. It can save you some real serious money. :)
