And today was mine! Its been a brutal winter so far this year. We have had so much snow so far that its up past my backside in many places and I am 5 ft 4 in.
Today the ice hanging off the roof was so bad I had no choice but to go out and try to get off as much as I could. There was about 6 inches of snow on top of 3 inches of ice on the edge of the roof.
I opened the garage with the remote control and got out the long handled ice scraper that we use from scraping ice off the sidewalks and started using it to knock the long icicles hanging off the roof. When I knocked the first couple down a huge pile of snow came down with it and hit me on the head and face. It was so heavy that it knocked me to my knees. I got up brushed myself off and continued. By the time I had gotten to the end of that side of the house, knocking off all the hanging ice I had been knocked down 3 more times by the big piles of snow coming down to. If you wonder how come I was close enough for the snow to hit me it's because I have to stand almost directly under the ice to knock it down.
After getting the ice problem taking care of I put the ice scraper back in the garage and then shut the garage door. Down it went and as soon as it got to the bottom it came up again. I tried to shut it again and got the same results. So I checked the eyes of the system and made sure there was nothing blocking them. Our garage is one of those that has the safety deal where it won't close if a child or small animal happens to walk under the door when its closing.
After I cleaned the eyes I tried to shut the door again and again it came back up as soon as it shut so I tried adjusting the eyes in case my son had hit one and knocked it out of whack. That did't help. I couldn't reach the pull rope to disengage the track and let the door down by hand. The only way I could get the door to stay shut was to hold the button inside the garage until the door was all the way down but in order to do that I had to stay in the garage to do it thus leaving me only one way out. Through the side door which was something I really didn't want to do since it was not going to be easy.
I can not get my son to shovel or snow blow a path out the back door to the garage no matter how much I beg. I go through this every winter. So I knew what was waiting for me when I had to go out the side door. Snow up past my backside! Believe me when I say I was not looking forward to it. I opened the door and stepped out. Immediately there was at least 3 feet of snow in front of the door. I got through that which was not easy. I almost lost my winter boots a couple of times. Then once I got past the end of the garage to where it was open and the snow drifts bad I was in snow that was way past my backside. I could not walk in it. I could not get my legs up that high. So I had no choice but to crawl my way through the snow. I only had to go about 20 feet to reach the back door but by the time I got there my legs were burning and I was hurting so bad I had to crawl up the stairs to get into the house. Once I got into the house my husband had to take my boots and coat off me because I to weak to.
The whole time I was trying to get through that deep snow I was fussing at myself and my son. I was fussing at him for being so lazy and fussing at myself because I have never thought of buying snowshoes. Now that we are moving south this summer it's to late but if I had bought them last year or even a few years ago. I would not have had to suffer the pain I did today.
For those of you who live in the north you might want to include a couple of pairs of snow shoes to your winter preps. You made need them to travel or even hunt after SHTF.
For anyone wondering why I had to be the one to go through all this today my husband is disabled severely so he could not do it and my son was at work. But since he refuses to keep me a path to the garage I am going to pay him back tonight. I am making him cook dinner and do the dishes while I sit and rest my legs. One of these days he is going to learn not to mess with mama. LOL
