Short on garden space try growing upwards

There are many ways to enlarge your limited gardening space in a small yard. Here are a couple.

Rain Gutter Garden:
Picture
My rain gutter garden
To make this I used 4 ten foot long plastic rain gutters, 8 gutter end caps, 16 gutter hangers and 4 eight foot 1x4 pine boards.

FIrst the pine boards were attached to the side of the garage. I wanted it done this way to use less screws in the garage siding and also to add more holding strength. Then I drilled small holes every six inches along the bottoms of the gutters for drainage.

I then attached the end caps to the gutters. The hangers were evenly spaced and screwed into the pine boards and then the gutters were attached to the hangers.
After the gutters were completed I filled them with potting soil and planted them with 2 different types of lettuce, beets and radishes.

While the rain gutters do dry out faster than other planters that was fine since a quick watering in the morning and another late in the afternoon was easy to do. And we enjoyed a nice bounty of fresh lettuce, radishes and beets during the summer.

One more way to grow upwards is to make some type of trellis and plant the plants in a garden bed. You can use recycled material for making the trellises.
Here I used two leg posts from an old wooden swing we had that was on it last leg and some old lattice we had. One this one I grew pie pumpkins which are doing good. I used old plactic onion bags to support the pumpkins with once they started growing.

And yet one more way to grow upwards using recycled posts and chicken wire.
One this one I planted a few Scarett Runner beans. Below its how they looked once they started growing. We have gotten quite a few nice meals out of the beans and since this is the first year we have ever had them we didn't know if we would like them. But like them, we did so next year I will be planted a bigger bed of them.

So you see, there are many ways you can grow lot of your own produce to feed your family no matter how small you city lot is.  So don't wait till next year. Get busy planning your garden space and you can even prepare your growing areas now so they will be ready for planting next spring. That way you will have a head start on a good growing season next year and start saving big time on your grocery bill.
Remember its never to late to start preparing for yours and your family's future and survival.
