Journals are an important part of life. They can be used to keep track of many things such as our personal thoughts and feelings, our family history, our yearly gardens, our relationships and more. They are in fact our own personal history.
Many of our history books not only came from reading official records of events that happened but also the journals of those who lived them. Lewis and Clark kept journals of their travels. George Washing kept journals of the war. Even cavemen kept journals of their hunts by drawing pictures of them on cave walls. Writing had not been invented yet but they found a way to leave a record of their life so their ancestors could learn from them and about them.
Family stories passed down from one generation to another by word of mouth is in a sense just a journal. The only problem with passing them down by word of mouth is that things get lost or embellished so they are no longer the true story. Just parts of one.
Keeping journals now should be an important part of life. Recording your own family history will be something special to pass down to your family's future generations. They are going to want to know about their ancestors. Their thoughts, their feelings, the way they lived, how things affected them, how they felt about important historical events and even how they did things. The skills they knew and how they did them.
Journals can be used to help keep track of livestock if your raise them. You can keep records of births, losses, feed, meds and more when it comes to your live stock. You can even keep track of the ones you sold, who you sold them to and if you think you want to sell them more or not.
If S*** ever does hit the fan and books are no longer made, news papers, TV and the like no longer exist it will be more important then ever for you to keep journals. You will be the record keepers for future generations to learn from. You will be the one keeping a record of the history of our country and the world. You will be the author of the worlds new history books, medical books, romance books, song books, cook books and so on.
So don't forget to add plenty of notebooks, paper, pens and pencils to your preps. And just in case cameras no longer work or you can't print out pictures store drawing and painting supplies if you are good at drawing people, places or things. It will be nice to pass down paintings or drawings of ancestors to the future generations.
