People with medical needs should always have at least a small bug out bag to carry their medical equipment in. You never know when a two hour trip can turn into a 4-5 hour trip because of breakdowns, storms or what ever else life can do to throw a money wrench in to your plans.
My husband and I are both diabetics. I keep one small bag ready to grab and go at all times. Every time we are going out of town for even and hour that bag goes with us. I am not going to take any chances if I don't have to.
In that bag I keep an extra blood glucose meter kit for each of us. An extra bottle of strips since we both use the same brand of meter. Extra lancets and Alcohol Swabs, 3 days of all meds, some glucose tablets, names and phone numbers of our doctors, allergy information and a list of each one of our meds, dosage and when we need them. Just before leaving the house I will grab our Novolog and Lantus, wrap in a towel with a small ice pack and add to the bag.
Also in the bag I keep an extra portable nebulizer and my husband's COPD meds. This way if we are gone for longer then we planned we can make sure that our medical needs are met at all times. It's hard enough to control our diabetes even with all our medical supplies with us. It would be so much worse if we did not have them.
My bag is just a small insulated one. It is big enough to carry 4 cans of pop. Just the right size for our medical needs. And it is easy to carry because it has a strap.
I keep it next to my purse at all times on the same shelf by the front door. It has come in very handy at times. Like when I had a flat tire and could not get the lug nuts off to change the tire. I had to wait until my husband and brother in law got there to help me change the tire. I had my kit with me which was good since my blood sugar level dropped to 65.
Any one with severe medical needs should keep a bag ready with at least 3 days supplies to take with them every time they leave the house. Even if they are just going shopping for a couple of hours. You never know when you are going to need those supplies.
