Some people prep for a short term crisis like a weather event or job loss. Others (like me) prepare for not only the short term events but for long term, end of the world as we know it, life and world changing events.
While short term preparations can and should usually be taken care of through storing supplies, a longer term event which can change our world for several years or more requires different preparations. There is still definitely a need to store food and other supplies for at least a year, but hopefully longer if we are able, when planning for long term. Those supplies, however, will eventually run out as time passes and we consume them. We can not depend on anyone else, including the government, to step in and take care of us if that happens.
A long term plan includes learning to live differently and becoming more self sufficient. Self sufficiency includes but isn't limited to growing food, preserving food, hunting and raising animals for meat and other purposes and many other skills which are no longer common in today's world.
I like to think of my food and supply storage as an important bridge. It is my insurance policy which will be used to get me from the beginning of a crisis to a place where I am able to survive off of the land. The goal is to have enough stored to provide food and other supplies until a level of self sufficiency is reached and the homestead begins to produce. Those supplies are necessary until a time when the crisis is past and you are able to openly plant or produce from the land. In the midst of a collapse, it is unrealistic to believe that we will be planting a garden or some such mundane chore. At first the focus will be surviving the here and now and as that bridge is crossed and things settle down, the other homesteading and pioneer skills will hopefully come into use.
So, while you are prepping and storing an emergency supply of items for survival, it is also the time to learn some of those homesteading and pioneer skills which will become more important as those precious supplies dwindle and life continues.
No matter where you are in your journey of prepping, I hope that you find this place helpful as you begin or continue to build your homestead and skills NOW as a serious part of your prepping. Through future posts, we will be talking about exactly what we need to be learning to survive the future whatever it may bring.
